Anyone near Seattle have a spot welder I can borrow? 
From what I remember on my trip to Seattle several years ago, there were plenty of glass blowers around. Maybe you could get one to form the glass section for you once you've created the wire grid. I'm sure it would be colorful but could they seal a vacuum? They could definitely make the nicest looking, WAF approved hand blown glass vacuum tube ever.
