View Full Version : Bandwidth limit for site is nearly full...

For the first time EVER, I got email from the company who hosts the site telling me the site has reached 80% of it's bandwidth limit. Every post makes the database bigger, so I saw this coming... I could either purge old posts from the site and reduce the size of the database or upgrade the hosting package.
I think you all know which option I chose....
Here's where I shamelessly ask you to help donate to the site.
Click HERE (http://www.martinloganowners.com/~tdacquis/forum/ML/help$.html) to find out how easy it is to donate $$ to the site..
Thanks to all of you who have already donated!
Rock On! :rocker:

Once I get paid I'll be sure to help out ;)
Have you ever tried to get ML to sponsor your efforts? I know they'd want a legal thing saying "views expressed are not the views of ..... blah blah" but it might be worth a shot?

Tom,
I noticed the FAQ section is relatively sparse. You could list some rules there about posting photos/files, and include links to programs such as the FREE Microsoft (PowerToy) "Photo Re-sizer", which easily converts pics to SMALLER file sizes, yet maintains suitable resolution for viewing...
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
For higher-res photos, users can post on a remotely hosted site such as photobucket.com, and then just embed the image URL in their message, like this...

This site will inevitably keep growing, so I also "2nd" the motion to inquire if ML/Shoreview might offer a bit of financial support for the site (though I agree us users should be willing to ponying up a bit to help).

There are size limits on all the attachments, so using a resizer is not necessary.
The upgrade doubled the bandwidth and disk space sizes, so I'm thinking we've got another 3 to 5 years before we need to start worrying about this again.
ML will never officially be affiliated with this site as it would be a conflict of interest and I agree.
Whenever I ask for money from you guys, I always get some and this time was no exception. Keep it coming! Every little bit helps!
Tom.
Tom,
Thanks for the reminder. I have been meaning to donate for sometime now, but you know how that goes. I guess now is as good a time as any. Thanks for all your effort at making this one of the best places on the net to hang out.

Tom-
Thanks for not purging the old posts....they're invaluable for us members with older equipment...

On it's way. Payment for the ML Event is just now going out on the 2nd. I'm for more bandwidth and I'd like to see more room for bigger rez photos. It's a pain to shrink the photos down the bare minimum. This has been an issue for me in the past and has resulted in fewer pics posted on my end.

I'm sure that you realize that bandwidth implies that we've been reading too much, as opposed to there is too much stuff stored on the system :). I've sent you a PM re: donations.

It's a combination of both actually. If there wasn't alot of stuff stored on the system, there wouldn't be a bandwidth issue, would there? Every time someone clicks on a thread with alot of photos (ie. Robin's "Seeing is Believing" post) those photos have to be downloaded to the users computer which counts against the bandwidth each month.
I've been keeping an eye on the stats of the site.. There are more users..more posts... and disk space and bandwith has really increased the last couple of months.
It's a good thing. :o

I am new to the site, but is seems a critical mass has been achieved and the growth has TAKEN OFF! Congrats! That is a GOOD THING!

just did a simple measurement: loading page 37 from the thread "hearing is believing", by far not the most picture-heavy page on this site, means downloading about 600 kb of data off the site. 20 years ago, with my 1200 baud modem, such an amount of data would have required half a day. Now it's only a matter of seconds, but it still means bandwidth...

Tom,
I apologize for causing problems. I'll send money. I just enjoy sharing / seeing photo's and visualizing my favorite subjects. As you know, photos fascinate and amaze me. I have been trying to re-size photos with my Photo Bucket account. I guess, I like photo's so much because I am a visual learner.
I have been posting a lot lately as well, which has probably contributed to this problem. I am hoping continued photo posting is OK though? :o

Hey Robin,
I used your thread as an example. I love those posts with all the glorious photos... as long as they're audio related, we're good to go! Keep it up.:D
